Kodi – what is it and How To’s

unnamedKodi® (formerly known as XBMC™) is free and open source (GPL) software media center for playing and streaming videos, music, pictures, games, and more. Kodi runs on Linux, OS X, Windows, iOS, and Android, featuring a 10-foot user interface for use with TVs and remote controls. It allows users to play and view most videos, music, podcasts, and other digital media files from local and network storage media and the internet.

The new update, which was named as Krypton, brings with it lots of new features and enhancements. For people already knowing the application the big change is the interface design, which claims to be easier to navigate for big screen and for touch devices.

Full change log is available on Kodi’s website, some highlights worth mentioning here are:

  • A new web-based interface named Chorus2.
  • A series of revamped settings menus for easier navigation.
  • Improved setup processes for PVR add-ons.
  • Better tag, album, and art information handling in the music library.
  • Moved to Android API 21 and SDK 21 with NDK 10 as minimum, meaning at least Android 5.0 is now required
  • Added support for iOS 10.0 by adding support for compiling Kodi with Xcode 8 IDE and iOS SDK 10.0 with Improved touch and gesture support for iOS based iDevice platforms (iPad, iPod, and iPhone)

Kodi is free media center software. If you’re an existing user, then the update is a no-brainer, and if you’re new to the app, then Kodi 17 is a great place to dive in and check it out.  Final version of Kodi 17 Krypton is available at kodi.tv and can be downloaded for iOS, Android, Windows, Mac, Apple TV, Linux and etc.

Here’s a tutorial on how to load and install Kodi on iOS 10  without jailbreak.  It is not the easy user-friendly solutions, but it is still one of the best ways of having Kodi installed on IOS device.

Requirements for the installation on iOs Device:

  • A computer running Mac OS (yes, Mac is a must)
  • Xcode 7 or newer installed. Xcode is Apple’s own development environment and is available to download for free from the Mac App Store.
  • An active Apple account. Free developer account will do the job but will require for loading every seven days. Sideloaded apps with full Apple Developer Program membership lasts one year. To create free developer account, head to appleid.apple.com. For full Apple Developer Program membership, head to developer.apple.com.
  • iOS App Signer utility which you can download from here.
  • Kodi deb files which you can download from here.

Side load / install Kodi on your iOS 10 device without jailbreak:

Step 1: Launch Xcode on your Mac. From the main Xcode screen select the Create a new Xcode project option. When the main Xcode interface appears, make sure the Application option is highlighted under iOS on the left-hand panel. Select Single View Application from the main interface and select Next.

Step 2: In the Product Name and Organization Name field, type in a unique name for this new application. You’ll also need to provide an Organization Identifier, which is generally a reverse domain entry that is inherited from the name of the application. As an example, we can use com.rp.[App Name]. Once it’s all set, click Next.

Step 3: Next up, choose a location to save the project.

Step 4: Xcode will now complain about the provisioning profile. You don’t really need to understand the complexities about these profiles so just click hit the Fix Issue button.

Note: Make sure that the iOS device you want to load the app is plugged into the Mac via USB and that the device itself is selected in the top navigation as the destination device in Xcode.

Step 5: In order to automatically fix the code signing issue, Xcode requires a signed in account. If prompted when clicking the Fix Issue button in Step 4 , click the Add button and sign in with your Apple ID and password. Once again, if prompted, select your Apple ID from the drop-down box and click the Choose button.
Xcode will automatically use the associated Apple ID and Developer account to resolve the issues that it was complaining about. When finished, it will no longer provide the Code Signing warning.

What are add-on’s Some of the must have ones

Add-ons are packages that add features and functions to the Kodi and usually they are not included in installation package.  Add-ons are developed by people on Team Kodi and third-parties.  Kodi has a growing list of community driven add-ons for online content like YouTube, Hulu, Grooveshark, Pandora Radio and other common official repository, while still enabling third-party developers to also host their own unofficial repositories for add-ons that any user can choose to add themselves if they like.

Unofficial add-ons / repositories  Safety notice: Only download content/apps/add-ons from sources you trust, and at your own risk. This list is maintained by the community and is not an endorsement of those add-ons.
